King James V and the Gosford Golf Myth

View through CrossRef
This chapter discusses several golf myths relating to the reign of King James V of Scotland (1513-1542). For example, it is argued that there is no historical basis to the claim that King James V of Scotland established a golf course at Gosford. It appears to be an assumption based on a misunderstanding by later authors of a comment concerning the Earl of Wemyss that was published in 1952. The myth also includes an erroneous link to the Scottish poet Robert Burns. Evidence of early golf being played at Barry Links in Scotland is also discussed.
