PANCHAKARMA FOR LIVER CARE: INTEGRATING AYURVEDA WITH MODERN HEPATOLOGY

View through CrossRef
Background: Liver disorders, including metabolic dysfunction–associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), cirrhosis, and viral hepatitis, represent a growing global health burden. Limitations in long-term management within modern hepatology highlight the need for complementary therapeutic strategies. Ayurveda offers a holistic understanding of liver diseases through the concepts of Yakrit, Agni, Ama, and Dosha imbalance. Aim: To evaluate the role of Panchakarma in the management of liver disorders through an integrative Ayurvedic and modern perspective. Objectives 1: To evaluate the effectiveness of Panchakarma in improving liver function and symptoms of liver diseases. 2.To correlate Ayurvedic principles with modern pathophysiological mechanisms involved in liver disorders. Material and Method: For this comprehensive review on panchakarma in liver diseases we were collected data from Ayurvedic and modern classics, Pub med, Google Scholar and other web searches. Used MESH Terms like Ayurevda panchakarma,Yakut Sharir, hepatimegaly to search. From collected data were analysed Panchakarma procedures -Vamana, Virechana, Basti, Nasya, and Raktamokshana. Result and Discussion: Panchakarma therapies have been observed to improve liver function parameters, alleviate clinical symptoms, and enhance overall metabolic balance, with notable benefits in hepatic conditions. These therapeutic outcomes can be understood through both classical Ayurvedic and modern biomedical perspectives, wherein Panchakarma facilitates elimination of vitiated Doshas, restoration of Agni, and removal of Ama, while also influencing the gut–liver axis, reducing inflammatory activity, and promoting metabolic regulation. Conclusion: Panchakarma demonstrates potential as an integrative approach in the management of liver disorders. While clinical outcomes are encouraging, further well-designed studies are needed to establish standardized protocols and scientific validation.
