On Japanese transverse flute
View through CrossRef
A kind of Japanese transverse flute “Nô-kan,” used in one of the most refined musical arts of Japan “Nô-gaku,” has a distinctive bore shape. The inside diameter between its mouthhole and the first tone-hole is narrowed by a short and small pipe, named “throat,” inserted tightly in its main pipe. The throat perturbs the octave relation between the first and second mode and causes discontinuity of harmonic structure between the two mode tones. These special features of a Nô-kan is quite contrary to the other kinds of flute such as the western concert flute, which has been improved to be tuned in equal temperament, and have uniform tone quality through a three octave range. The investigated quantities of structural dimensions and acoustical properties of a Nô-kan will be reported in connection with its musical function compared to the other kinds of Japanese flute and the wetern concert flute.
