<p><strong>Resumo</strong>: O presente artigo tem como objetivo rediscutir a posição de <em>Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas </em>(1881), de Machado de Assis, em relação ao romance oitocentista brasileiro. Pretende-se evidenciar as rupturas e as continuidades que o romance machadiano possui em relação à prosa de ficção anterior. Trata-se de traçar um fragmento de uma possível tradição interna do romance oitocentista. Para tanto, analisarei <em>A Carteira de Meu Tio</em> (1855), Joaquim Manuel de Macedo, de modo a evidenciar algumas relações, de continuidades e rupturas, com <em>Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas. </em></p><p><strong>Palavras-chave</strong>: Romance Oitocentista – Machado de Assis – Joaquim Manuel de Macedo.</p><p> </p><p><strong>Abstract</strong>: This article aims to discuss the position of Machado de Assis’ <em>Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas</em>, regarding Brazilian Nineteenth Century novel. It aims to underline the ruptures and continuities between Machado de Assis’ novel and previous fiction prose. The idea is to map a fragment of a possible internal tradition in Brazilian novel. In order to do this, I will analyze <em>A Carteira de Meu Tio</em> (1855), written by Joaquim Manuel de Macedo, in order to establish some connections to<em> Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas.</em></p><p><strong>Keywords</strong>: Nineteenth-Century Novel – Machado de Assis – Joaquim Manuel de Macedo.</p>
