Role of the PM-KISAN Scheme in Increasing Farmers’ Income: An Analysis of Bhagalpur District

View through CrossRef
The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme is an important direct income support initiative of the Government of India, aimed at ensuring income stability for small and marginal farmers and promoting agricultural investment. Launched on December 1, 2018, the scheme provides eligible farmers with ₹6000 per year in three equal installments through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). So far, more than ₹4.09 lakh crore has been distributed in over 21 installments to more than 9 crore farmers under this scheme, demonstrating its wide reach and effectiveness. This study presents an objective analysis of the economic impact of the PM-KISAN scheme in the context of Bhagalpur district in the state of Bihar. The study utilizes state-level authenticated data, government reports, and scientific research studies. Since detailed direct studies on Bhagalpur district are limited, findings from districts with similar agro-economic structures have also been comparatively included. The analysis clearly shows that the PM-KISAN scheme has played a significant role in strengthening farmers’ financial capital, increasing agricultural investment, and ensuring income stability. The regular cash assistance provided through the scheme has improved farmers’ liquidity position, enabling them to invest in seeds, fertilizers, and agricultural equipment. Additionally, the scheme has proven helpful in reducing farmers’ dependence on credit and enhancing their risk-bearing capacity. In conclusion, it can be said that the PM-KISAN scheme is functioning as an effective income support mechanism for farmers in Bhagalpur district as well as Bihar, although administrative reforms and complementary policy interventions are necessary to further strengthen its impact. Abstract in Hindi Language:
