Performance of a Ni-45Cr-1Mo Wrought Alloy in Fossil Fuel-Burning Power Plants

Abstract
Nickel-based alloys with high chromium contents such as 50%Cr-50%Ni are known to have excellent resistance to sulfur attack in coal-fired and heavy oil-fired boilers. However, commercial high-chromium nickel based alloys containing 40-50% chromium levels are supplied only in product forms such as castings, powder and inner duplex tube. Therefore, the applications of these alloys are limited. Ni-45Cr-1Mo, which is composed of 45% chromium, 1% molybdenum and nickel (balance), has been specifically developed as a wrought alloy with improved workability in spite of its high chromium content of 45%. Ni-45Cr-1Mo is easily fabricated into all product forms such as plate, sheet, wire and tube. In this paper, the resistance of Ni-45Cr-1Mo to sulfur attack will be discussed, and the applications of Ni-45Cr-1Mo for fossil fuel-burning power plants will be demonstrated.
