Lolium mairei (Festuca mairei St. Yves), commonly known as Atlas fescue, holds significant horticultural and forage value.The species has also become a focus of interest in molecular biology, cytogenetics and breeding research. This allotetraploid grass, native to North Africa, has adapted exceptionally well to semi-arid climatic conditions thanks to its unique genetic and morphological characteristics. This review provides a detailed account of the species’ taxonomic status, cytogenetic characteristics, anatomical structure and evolutionary role, and highlights its significance in breeding and horticultural applications.
