Abstract
Best known as the woman who married Nathaniel Hawthorne, Sophia Peabody Hawthorne (1809–71) before her marriage wrote what many scholars consider the first transcendentalist manuscript while living in Cuba for her health. Two years before Emerson’s Nature (1836), Sophia’s “Cuba Journal” was circulated among a network of New England intellectuals and artists, who appreciated its ecstatic descriptions of tropical sunsets and exotic flora. Anticipating Emerson’s language, Sophia wrote: “[I]t is pure, single Nature, alone in her power & loveliness, that touches subdues and exalts the soul—We do not remember the godlike here—but we think of god here.” A gifted painter as well as a writer, Sophia is often portrayed as a woman who sacrificed her artistic ambitions for her famous husband.
