SP 2.07 A National Prospective Audit of Acute Pancreatitis in the era of GLP-1 agonists (PANDORA): Breaking Results
View through CrossRef
Abstract
Background
Acute pancreatitis (AP) occurs in 56 per 100,000 people each year in the UK. The use of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) is increasing and may be linked to the development of AP. The PANDORA audit aimed to describe the diagnosis, management, and outcomes of patients presenting with AP with concurrent use of GLP-1RA.
Methods
A national, observational, snapshot audit of practice was undertaken between Sept-Dec 2025. Consecutive patients presenting with proven AP and concurrent GLP-1RA were included. Endpoints of interest comprised diagnostic (biochemical & radiological) modality, incidence of ICU admission and complications, and compliance to MHRA Yellow Card reporting. The data presented are early breaking results based on an interim analysis.
Results
The audit took place across 105 UK hospitals. A small majority of patients were female (53.4%) with median age 45-55. The most common aetiology of AP was gall stones (54%). Some 8% of patients with proven AP were taking a GLP-1RA, most commonly for the indication of weight loss (90%) and mostly sourced from private pharmacies (42%). Few instances of AP with GLP-1RA were reported to the MHRA (<5%). Admission to critical care occurred in 4.8% (GLP-1RA) and 4.2% (non-GLP-1RA) patients in this interim analysis.
Conclusion
Early breaking results of the national PANDORA audit are presented. Almost 1-in-10 patients presenting to UK hospitals with AP are taking a GLP-1RA. The full data will inform our understanding of diagnosis, management, and outcomes of this important group.
