Mexico state elections may mark peak Morena dominance
View through CrossRef
Significance
Quintana Roo also renewed its state congress, while in Durango voters elected mayors and other municipal authorities. The National Regeneration Movement (Morena) of President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO) and its allies won four governorships, while two went to candidates representing opposition alliances. Morena will now govern 20 of Mexico’s 32 states.
Impacts
Rising inflation and stubbornly high crime rates are likely to undermine Morena’s support in the short-to-medium term.
The government will maintain its criticism of the INE as it seeks to pass an electoral reform bill.
Morena’s lack of a two-thirds congressional majority will continue to hinder its pursuit of constitutional reforms.
