Analogy and Meta phor from Thomas Aquinas to Duns Scotus and Walter Burley

View through CrossRef
This chapter gives a survey account of the interrelations of three extremely important notions that were constantly employed in many forms of argumentation in metaphysics: analogy, metaphor, and equivocation. In particular, the author explores a crucialchange in the concept of analogy that occurred from Aquinas to Scotus to Walter Burley (1274-1344). Since Scotus's concerns with analogy and equivocation on the concept of being is at the very heart of his metaphysics, Ashworth’s paper ends with a translation from Scotus's commentary on Aristotle's Categories, making this important text available to non-specialists and bolstering her exposition of the change itself.
