A MORPHOMETRIC STUDY OF ACETABULUM IN UDAIPUR POPULATION
View through CrossRef
Background: The acetabulum is an approximately hemispherical cavity situated at lateral aspect of the hip bone. It faces antero-inferiorly and it is
circumscribed by an irregular margin decient inferiorly at the acetabular notch. The pubis, ischium and the ilium form the pubic bone. Orthopedic
surgeons and biomedical engineers are trying to make the best prosthesis for total hip replacement. Methadology: This was a cross-sectional,
observational study done on 50 dry hip bones of unknown age and sex collected from the Department of Anatomy, RNT Medical College, Udaipur,
Rajasthan, India. Antero-posterior diameter of acetabulum and Acetabular notch diameter were measured and shape of anterior ridge of
acetabulum were Visually examined. Results:Atotal of 50 dry hip bones of unknown age and gender were studied. Mean antero-posterior diameter
of the acetabulum was found to be 5.14cm and mean acetabular notch width was 2.50cm. Most common shape of anterior acetabular ridge was
found to be curved shape which constitute about 48%. Irregular and straight shape was seen in 18% bones. 16% of bones showed angular acetabular
ridge. Conclusion: The narrow notch width in our study may be related to the high prevalence of curved anterior acetabular ridges, as both features
are associated with increased joint stability. This nding has implications for orthopedic surgeons, as a narrower notch width may require
adjustments in surgical approaches and hip prosthetic design.
