Reception of antiquity in the Cold war period (1946–1953)
View through CrossRef
The article is devoted to a case of reception of antiquity in political rhetoric of the early cold war (19461953). Political situation in the USA (anti-communism and McCarthy Era) and in the USSR (ideological campaigns of late Stalinism) pressed ancient historians much, so they used ancient history for actualization and substantiation of their position in ideological conflict. Thucydides description of the Peloponnesian war between Athens and Sparta became a specific ancient Greek mirror of the real situation in international affairs of the mid-20th c. Two scientific journals, Classical Journal in the USA and Vestnik drevnei istorii (VDI) in the USSR became the panel of political discussion on the historical background. The argumentation was close in both cases, so we may speak about specific political apology on the base of ancient history, which took place in the early cold war period.
