PROBIOTICS AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO ANTIBIOTICS
View through CrossRef
Antibiotic resistance is developing due to the widespread and often irrational use of antibiotics, threatening global public health. In this context, probiotics—live microorganisms that provide beneficial effects—are viewed as a promising antimicrobial alternative. Probiotics can suppress pathogen growth through direct antimicrobial activity, competition for nutrients and receptors, modulation of the immune response, and prevention of biofilm formation. They effectively reduce the frequency and severity of infections, stimulate microbiota restoration after antibiotic therapy, and enhance the effects of antibiotics. Meta-analyses confirm their usefulness in the prevention and treatment of a range of bacterial diseases, particularly in gastroenterology, dentistry, and veterinary medicine. Current research highlights the strain-specificity of their effects and the development of "next-generation probiotics" for personalized therapy. An example of an innovative application is the synbiotic complex "AC-Probionorm", which exhibits pronounced antimicrobial activity and promotes normal immune response without disrupting normal microflora. Thus, probiotics represent a promising approach to combating bacterial infections in the face of increasing antibiotic resistance.

Title: PROBIOTICS AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO ANTIBIOTICS
