Drug Delivery System for the Students of M.Pharm 1 Semester

View through CrossRef
The pharmaceutical sciences have witnessed tremendous advancements over the past few decades, with continuous innovation transforming the way medicines are formulated, delivered, and optimised for therapeutic outcomes. Among the various disciplines of pharmacy, the science of drug delivery has emerged as a critical and evolving field, aiming to enhance the safety, efficacy, and patient compliance of pharmaceutical products. The growing complexity of therapeutic molecules, along with the demand for precision medicine, has made advanced drug delivery systems an indispensable aspect of modern pharmaceutical development. This book, “Drug Delivery System”, is a comprehensive academic endeavour to address this crucial domain. The journey of compiling this book began with a core realization: while pharmacy students are introduced to conventional dosage forms and routes of administration, there is often a lack of structured exposure to emerging drug delivery technologies, practical industrial applications, and regulatory perspectives. Bridging this academic-industry divide requires a focused resource that not only explains fundamental principles but also integrates advanced technologies, design strategies, and translational applications. This book seeks to fill that gap by providing a systematic, application-oriented, and innovation-driven exploration of drug delivery science. Drug delivery is inherently interdisciplinary, incorporating principles from pharmaceutics, materials science, nanotechnology, pharmacokinetics, biomedical engineering, and regulatory science. This book encompasses this broad scope, covering key areas such as transdermal systems, mucosal delivery, targeted drug delivery, controlled release formulations, implantable devices, and the role of nanocarriers. It also highlights emerging approaches such as stimuli-responsive systems, personalised delivery platforms, and bioinspired carriers. This text book is specifically designed for Master of Pharmacy (M.Pharm) students, particularly those specialising in pharmaceutics, pharmaceutical technology, and industrial pharmacy. It is also highly relevant to researchers, academic professionals, and industry scientists engaged in formulation development, drug delivery research, and pharmaceutical manufacturing. The content aligns with current educational frameworks recommended by the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) and various Indian and international universities. Each chapter is structured to move progressively from fundamental concepts to practical and industrial applications, enriched with case studies, regulatory considerations, and recent scientific advancements. Topics such as formulation design, characterisation techniques, biopharmaceutical evaluation, and scale-up strategies have been discussed with a view to real-world utility. Regulatory guidelines from agencies such as USFDA, EMA, and CDSCO are included where applicable to help students understand the broader implications of drug delivery design. The book also explores the significance of drug delivery systems in addressing global health challenges improving patient compliance through needle-free systems, reducing side effects via targeted delivery, and ensuring access through cost-effective and stable formulations. It advocates for responsible innovation, ethical research practices, and the integration of scientific rigour with patient-centered solutions. It is my sincere hope that “Drug Delivery System” will serve as a reliable academic companion for students and a valuable reference for professionals. I welcome feedback, critical suggestions, and scholarly dialogue to continually improve future editions. May this work inspire the next generation of pharmaceutical scientists to innovate, translate, and elevate the field of drug delivery for the benefit of patients and society at large.
