Milan, Kastell view

View through Europeana Collections
This is illustrated by a graded, slightly three-dimensional plan of the Castello Sforzesco in Milan, made by the augsburg cartographer and engraver Gabriel Bodenehr the Elder (1673-1765). The fort has a hexagonal bastion facility that was installed during Spanish rule in the 17 and 18th century was and is surrounded by a moat. The names of the 6 turmless bastions are noted directly. The installation inside is almost square and was built in 1450 by Francesco I Sforza on the site of the demolished 14th century castle of the Visconti family. It consists of several building wings that enclose courtyards. The largest, transverse courtyard is Piazza d 'Arme, the parade ground. The Rocchetta is located in the west and the Corte Ducale in the north, i.e. the ducal residence. The plant has often been rebuilt, including Leonardo da Vinci and Filarete Bramante have also provided plans for this. The bastion system was polished by Napoleon from 1800 and later converted into a park (Parco Sempione), the moat is also not preserved. The increasingly decaying castel due to its loss of meaning was fundamentally renewed between 1893 and 1905 by Luca Beltrami. During this time, the representative central tower was reconstructed, which was built in 1485 and destroyed in a powder explosion in 1521. Therefore, he cannot be seen on the engraving. Bodenehr did not lay a legend about his plan, but described all the elements directly on the engraving. Signature: Gabriel Bodenehr fec. et exc. AUG. V.
