Cloth decorated with gold leaf

View through Europeana Collections
This canvas has been painted with gold paint, 'prada' in Indonesian. First the contours are drawn on the canvas. This is done freehand. The thin gold leaf is glued to the fabric with fishing glue. Motifs often used are lotus flowers and swastikas. \The use of prada makes the cloth special and expensive and is therefore only worn on special occasions such as a tooth filing ceremony or wedding. The prada cloths are also used as decorations for buildings. Today prada cloths are still being made and are nowadays accessible for everyone and are used by all castes. The real gold leaf is nowadays replaced by paint with copper pigments or plastic gold foil.
