Storm, Kidōmaru hiding under a cowhide at Ichihara-plain planning to kill Raikō
View through Europeana Collections
Ichiyūsai Kuniyoshiga’s 様様様 series with well-known figures from the history and legends of the Asian cultural circle compared to individual chapters from the Genji novel (Genji monogatari I様). Here’s a comparison with the 28th chapter of the Genji novel “Nowaki Hier 様.” But the Genji chapter sign on the top right does not match that of the 6th chapter. Just like KI 12644-7, it only consists of five longitudinal bars (actually chapter 2). Had Kuniyoshi forgotten which sign belongs to this chapter? The picture shows Kidōmaru, who belongs to the band of the Shutendōji Hier 子 (legendary figure, half human and above demon). The flowers (some of them belonging to the Seven Autumn Grains) indicate that it is autumn.
