Evaluation of the Scavenging Activity of Aqueous and Ethanol Leaf Extract of Musa Paradisiaca

View through CrossRef
Abstract Background: Musa paradisiaca, a herbaceous plant with a robust tree like pseudostem, a crown of large elongated oval deep-green leaves. Aim: Evaluation of hydrogen peroxide, 2,2-diphenyl-1- picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), Hydoxyl and superoxide radical scavenging activity by aqueous and ethanol leaf extracts of Musa paradisiaca using standard spectrophotometric method and compared with Ascorbic acid standards. Methods: Various concentrations (µg/ml) of ethanol and aqueous leaf extracts of Musa parasidiaca (i.e 62.5, 125, 250 and 500) were prepared with similar concentrations of ascorbic acid as controls. Each concentration was evaluated for the scavenging activity of 2, 2- diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazy (DPPH), Hydroxyl radical, Hydrogen peroxide and Superoxide Radical using Beaucham and Fridouch method and compared. Data were analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 26. Results: The results showed significant dose dependent DPPH Radical, Hydrogen peroxide, Superoxide Radical and Hydroxyl radical scavenging activity by aqueous leaf extract of M paradisisaca. The result also showed standard ascorbic acid scavenge DPPH Radical, Hydrogen peroxide, Superoxide Radical and Hydroxyl radical significantly higher (P<0.05) than the aqueous leaf extract of M paradisisaca. There was significant dose dependent DPPH Radical, Hydrogen peroxide, Superoxide Radical and Hydroxyl radical scavenging activity by ethanol leaf extract of M paradisisaca while the standard ascorbic acid scavenge DPPH Radical, Hydrogen peroxide, Superoxide Radical and Hydroxyl radical significantly (P<0.05) compared to the ethanol leaf extract of M paradisisaca. Conclusions: Study showed that aqueous and ethanol leaf extracts of Musa paradisiaca scavenges hydrogen peroxide, DPPH, Hydoxyl and superoxide radical suggestive of antioxidant properties.
