Abstract
Eschatology is the branch of theology devoted to the
eschata
, the last things, and to the
eschaton
, or the end time. In Christian thought, eschatology has been subdivided into individual eschatology, focusing on the ultimate destiny of the person after death, and collective eschatology, concerned with the Second Coming of Christ and the consummation of history. A collective eschatology that expects a sudden and especially violent end of history can also be described as an “apocalyptic” eschatology.
