திரைக்கடல் ஓடித் திரவியம் தேடிய தமிழன் என்ற ஆய்வுக் கட்டுரையில் செல்வதற்கு முன் சங்க காலத் தமிழகம் எவ்வாறு இருந்தது என்பதை அறிந்து கொள்ள வேண்டும். சங்க காலத் தமிழகத்தின் வட எல்லை வேங்கட மலை என்று சங்க நூல்களில் குறிப்பிடப்பட்டுள்ளது. தெற்கெல்லை குமரிமுனை கிழக்கு மற்றும் மேற்கு எல்லைகளில் கடல் சூழ்ந்திருந்தது. தமிழகத்தில் சேர நாடு சோழநாடு பாண்டியநாடு தொண்டை நாடு கொங்குநாடு என்ற ஐந்து நாடுகள் இருந்தன என்றும் பண்டைய தமிழகத்தை சேர சோழ பாண்டியர்களும் கொங்கு தொண்டை மண்டல குறுநில மன்னர்களும் ஆண்டு வந்துள்ளனர் என்பதையும் அறிய முடிகிறது.
