Cloth with zigzag lines

View through Europeana Collections
The cloth (in Spanish sut or tzute) is woven with cotton in a hip loom. The cloth has zigzag lines applied with a cotton brocade. Brocade is a decorative technique where extra threads are added to the warp and weft during the weaving itself. The cloth also contains fringes at one of the ends. Furthermore the ends are decorated at the edge by using the Jaspe technique. Jaspe is a dyeing technique in knots with which decorative motifs are produced. It involves covering specific areas of the thread (by knotting the thread at specific points) to prevent these areas from becoming coloured when the thread is dipped in the paint. When the knots are undone, after dyeing, the thread contains dyed and unpainted segments. During the weaving process, figures are formed with these threads.‖ Incidentally, the cloth consists of one piece of woven textile. \A sut or tzute is a garment that can be used by various purposes: it can serve to cover the head, shoulders and arms during ceremonial ceremonies or as protection from the sun; to carry children or groceries in; to hold sacred objects and images of saints, store bread, and set tables during ceremonial occasions.
