Mistranslations in Indonesian-Korean literature translations

View through CrossRef
This paper examines the types of mistranslations found in Indonesian-Korean literature translation and suggests that linguistic analysis is essential for a more appropriate translation. Specifically, this paper investigates the following existing translations: (1) a novelette called Sri Sumarah, written by the prominent Indonesian novelist Umar Kayam; (2) a war record, Tjatatan Korea, written by the Indonesian novelist Mochtar Lubis; and (3) examples in four articles of modern Indonesian literature. The results of the study reveal that there are five types of mistranslations in Indonesian-Korean translations, namely word, word formation, syntactic structure, omission of content, and addition of content. With regard to the types of mistranslations, this study suggests solutions that may improve the quality of Indonesian-Korean translations, and consequently concludes that linguistic analysis is undeniably important to facilitate appropriate Indonesian-Korean translation.
