Civility friendship: an analysis of the impossibility of child friendship as a pedagogical component in Erasmus of Rotterdam

View through CrossRef
ABSTRACT Although well established, the current relationship between friendship, childhood, and education constitutes an event in the history of friendship. In the wake of studies seeking to comprehend the emergence of this phenomenon, this article examines the work of the educational theorist Erasmus of Rotterdam, particularly the treatise On Civility in Children, situated at the dawn of modern pedagogy. The objective here is to verify the (im)possibility of juvenile friendship as an element of the pedagogical problematic, analysing the rules of veridiction that underpin Erasmian conceptions of education, humanity, childhood, and friendship. It is concluded that Erasmian friendship, referred here as "civility friendship," which is grounded in reason, freedom, and virtue, is inaccessible to the child due to its incompleteness. Consequently, (child) friendship cannot be present in the pedagogical issues of the author, and perhaps of all Renaissance.
