Porträt Gotthilf Samuel Steinbart (1738-1809)

View through Europeana Collections
Portrait of Gotthilf Samuel Steinbart. The philosopher and pedagogue are shown here as a headdress in the profile to the left. His lips surrounded a smile. He wears a short wig with curls; the approach shows the clothing of a theologian, dark robe and beffchen. The portrait is framed round and decorated with a loop at the top. Under the effigy follows a board with its name. Gotthilf Samuel Steinbart studied theology in Halle near Siegmund Jakob Baumgarten (BS-III 414) and in Frankfurt (Oder) to take over the management of his father’s orphanage in Züllichau. From 1774 he worked in Frankfurt as professor of philosophy, later he also took over theology. In 1787 he was appointed theological adviser to King Friedrich Wilhelm III. He was appointed as a high school councilor and appointed to the Berlin High School College. The leaf was executed as a copper engraving by the Berlin engraver Daniel Berger (1744-) after the presentation of his colleague, the painter and eraser Johann Georg Rosenberg (1739-1808), in 1785. Other copies of the paper are in the Gleimhaus in Halberstadt, the Staatsliche Graphische Exemplare (State Graphische Exemplare) in Munich, the University Library in Leipzig and the art collection of the Veste Coburg. The paper is not to be confused with an identical engraving by Johann Heinrich Lips (1758-1817), which is located in the British Museum in London, for example. Signature: J. Rosenberg del. D. Berger Sculp. 1785. Caption: GOTTHILF SAMUEL STEINBART. (Stiftung Händel-Haus Halle Foundation)
