Parole is one of the most common forms of community corrections. Parole is the release of individuals from prison to the community, where they are allowed to serve a portion of their sentence provided that they comply with the conditions of their release. The landscape of the criminal justice system in the United States has experienced significant changes over the past 30 years. Consequently, almost all aspects of the parole process have experienced changes during this time. Today, a record number of people are on parole in our communities. The basic dimensions of parole and the changing nature and scope of parole as well as future directions are addressed.
