Draupadī

Abstract This chapter offers a nuanced exploration of Draupadī, the central female figure of the Mahābhārata, examining her as a symbol of agency, resilience, and complexity within epic and social contexts. Moving beyond the trope of victimhood, the analysis foregrounds Draupadī’s assertiveness, her negotiation of dharma, and her relationships with the Pāṇḍavas, Kṛṣṇa, and Karṇa. The chapter interrogates themes of polyandry, female desire, political strategy, and the intersection of personal and collective honour. Draupadī’s experiences—ranging from her fiery birth and polyandrous marriage to her humiliation and quest for justice—illuminate the dynamics of power, gender, and voice in the Mahābhārata. Her story, marked by suffering, protest, and friendship, continues to challenge and inspire debates on identity, autonomy, and the enduring legacy of epic women.
