The Problem of primary knapping technique in Steppe Paleolithic sites
View through CrossRef
In the region east of the Kherlen River, characterized by low mountains and vast plains, relatively little Paleolithic research has been conducted in recent times. Therefore, this article examines the primary flaking techniques used in the production of stone tools at the Paleolithic sites discovered in recent years in the territory of Sukhbaatar province, specifically at Achaat Mountain, Bogd Mountain, and the Otson Tsohio and Zuun Shovkh sites. These sites are associated with the final stage of the Middle Paleolithic and the Early and Middle Upper Paleolithic. The primary flaking techniques used in stone tool production were directed toward the center, with Levallois and parallel flaking methods predominating. The Levallois flaking technique was used relatively late, continuing until the Middle Upper Paleolithic, likely in relation to the regional Paleolithic cultural zonation.
