INTRODUCTION TO MALE REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH- AYURVEDA PERSPECTIVE

View through CrossRef
Male reproductive health is a complex phenomenon that extends beyond isolated parameters such as testosterone levels or sperm count. According to the World Health Organization, reproductive health encompasses complete physical, mental, and social well-being in relation to reproductive functions and processes. Ayurveda offers a comprehensive and integrative framework for understanding male reproductive health by emphasizing the coordinated functioning of physiological, psychological, and lifestyle-related factors. From an Ayurvedic perspective, reproductive health is governed by the balanced state of Dosha, Dhatu, Agni, and Mala, along with psychological components such as Atma, Mana, Indriya, and Triguna. Among the Dhatus, Shukra Dhatu holds a central role in reproduction and sexual function. Classical texts describe Shukra Dhatu not merely as semen or sperm, but as a system-wide functional entity involving nourishment, vitality, libido, and reproductive potential. The concepts of Sthayi and Asthayi Shukra Dhatu further explain its structural and regulatory dimensions. Proper functioning of Agni and effective Dhatu Poshana through appropriate Aahar (diet) and Vihar (lifestyle) are essential for maintaining healthy Shukra Dhatu. This also explores the role of Mala (Purisha, Mutra, and Sweda) in reproductive health, highlighting how impaired excretion can disturb Agni and Dhatu balance, ultimately affecting Shukra Dhatu. Classical descriptions of Shukra Dhatu Vriddhi, Kshaya, and Shukra Dosha are correlated with modern clinical conditions such as hypersexual disorders, hypogonadism, ejaculatory dysfunctions, infertility, and psychosexual disturbances. Additionally, modern perspectives on the nervous, endocrine, vascular, and psychological systems are integrated to provide a comprehensive understanding of male reproductive and sexual health.
