J. G. Ballard, a.k.a. Shanghai Jim
View through CrossRef
This biographical chapter traces Ballard’s life from Shanghai, China, where he was interned as a child in a Japanese prison camp during WWII, to Shepperton, England, where he spent most of his adult life until his death in 2009. His writing is distinguished by the technology and violence that he experienced as a child of war. Given the “extreme metaphors” and graphic content that animate his pseudo-autobiographies and narrative experiments, Ballard the man has been misperceived as a psychopath when in fact he led a relatively mild-mannered, uneventful adult life. The source material in this chapter primarily derives from interviews, Ballard’s autobiography Miracles of Life, and a 1991 BBC biopic.
