AbstractThis chapter recounts the career of Carlotta Ikeda, one of the first three butô dancers to perform in France in 1978. She then relocated to France and become one of the three faces of butô in France through the 80s and 90s. She led a life straddling boundaries of sexuality, performance, and ethnicity, and taught butô to countless western performers. The chapter describes and analyses the following performances: A White Day (Une Journée Blanche, 1991), The Language of the Sphinx (1992), and Ai-Amour (1993, co-choreographed with Murobushi Kô).
