COSMETOLOGY- EMERGING FIELD FROM TRADITIONAL TREASURE TO MODERN MYSTERY

View through CrossRef
Ayurvedic cosmetology, traditionally known as Saundarya Shastra, is a holistic science of beauty that emphasizes the harmony of body, mind, and lifestyle rather than mere external appearance. Unlike modern cosmetology, which primarily focuses on surface-level correction, Ayurveda views beauty as a reflection of internal health, balanced doshas, efficient metabolism, and mental well-being. In recent years, growing global demand for natural, safe, and sustainable cosmetic solutions has brought Ayurvedic cosmetology into renewed focus. Classical Ayurvedic texts such as Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, and Ashtanga Hridaya provide extensive descriptions of skincare, haircare, rejuvenation therapies, and daily regimens aimed at maintaining beauty and longevity. Contemporary scientific research has validated the cosmetic potential of several Ayurvedic herbs including Haridra (Curcuma longa), Neem (Azadirachta indica), Amalaki (Emblica officinalis), Manjistha (Rubia cordifolia), and Yashtimadhu (Glycyrrhiza glabra), which exhibit antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and anti-aging properties. These findings support their use in managing acne, pigmentation, premature aging, and photo-damage. A unique strength of Ayurvedic cosmetology lies in its personalized approach based on Prakriti (individual constitution), enabling dosha-specific skincare and haircare regimens. The concept of “beauty from within” is further emphasized through Rasayana therapies and nutricosmetics, which promote tissue nourishment and long-term radiance. Emerging trends also include eco-friendly practices, ethical sourcing, revival of traditional beauty rituals, and integration of modern technology for personalized care. Collectively, these developments position Ayurvedic cosmetology as a comprehensive, sustainable, and scientifically relevant system of beauty care for the modern era.
