Porträt Thomas Augustine Arne (1710-1778)

Portrait of Thomas Augustine Arne. On this sheet is an English composer’s chest pattern facing to the right. His head is slightly turned to the left and he looks towards the viewer. He wears a coat with fur collar, a shirt with jabot and a short wig with braid. His portrait is framed in an oval frame.
Thomas Arne used national-British melodies in his compositions, which he linked to Italian and German neologism. In 1745 he was employed as a composer for the Vauxhall Gardens amusement park in London and attracted the interest of the audience with some small fine tunes. The melody of an unofficial English national anthem, “Rule, Britannia!,” also comes from him.
The sheet is not signed. However, the paper is probably by the London painter Robert Dunkarton (1744-1811) of 1778, who in turn will have copied William Humphrey’s work, today at the National Portrait Gallery in London. Therefore, there is also similarity to another portrait of the Händel-Haus Foundation: BS-III 61.
