Louis de Navarre († 1376), un prince cadet entre solidarité familiale et ambition personnelle

The careers of many younger sons of royal families were often similar. Even when they became involved in government, they often chose to free themselves from their older brothers’ authority by embarking on distant adventures in hopes of establishing dynasties of their own. This was true of Louis of Navarre († 1376), the younger brother of King Charles II of Navarre, count of Évreux (1349-1387). After having been his brother’s counsellor and deputy, he married the putative heiress of the kingdom of Naples, who also possessed rights to Albania. But, in following the other members of his family in staunchly supporting Charles of Navarre’s policies towards both Spain and France, he also provides a striking – and rare – example of fraternal solidarity.
