Notation Bilingualism and Cross-Cultural Competence: A Conceptual Framework for Reimagining Early Music Literacy in Guzheng Education
View through CrossRef
In an era characterized by rapid globalization and increasing cultural interconnectedness, contemporary educational systems face a dual imperative: preserving national cultural heritage while simultaneously adapting to internationally recognized educational practices. This conceptual framework paper examines the phenomenon of notation bilingualism, defined as the ability to achieve parallel mastery and fluent navigation of traditional Chinese numbered notation (Jianpu) and Standard Western Notation (SWN) within the context of primary school extracurricular Guzheng education in Taizhou, China. As a conceptual study, this paper does not involve empirical data collection; rather, it develops a theoretically grounded framework to guide future research and instructional practice. Historically, Guzheng pedagogy has relied predominantly on Jianpu, an intuitive notation system that lowers entry barriers for novice learners but offers limited capacity for representing complex harmonic structures, polyphonic textures, and advanced ensemble configurations. Consequently, traditional music education stands at a critical crossroads as contemporary curriculum reforms increasingly introduce the five-line staff system into formal school music programs, creating potential fragmentation between school-based and extracurricular learning environments. To address this pedagogical divide, the paper proposes a comprehensive conceptual model that synthesizes Social Constructivist Learning Theory and Cognitive Load Theory (CLT) within the ADDIE instructional design framework. It argues that musical notation should be understood not merely as a technical tool for decoding musical symbols, but as a socio-culturally mediated artifact through which musical meaning is constructed, interpreted, and transmitted. When implemented through systematic scaffolding, multimodal learning resources, and culturally responsive pedagogies, notation bilingualism has the potential to preserve cultural authenticity while simultaneously expanding learners’ musical and intercultural competencies. The proposed framework suggests that dual-notation learning can reduce unnecessary cognitive burden, strengthen symbolic flexibility, enhance music cognition, and support the development of technical and expressive musical skills. Ultimately, notation bilingualism is conceptualized as a pathway toward cross-cultural competence, enabling young musicians to navigate both traditional Chinese and global musical contexts within an increasingly interconnected cultural landscape.
Title: Notation Bilingualism and Cross-Cultural Competence: A Conceptual Framework for Reimagining Early Music Literacy in Guzheng Education
