Mosaic Fragments.

View through Europeana Collections
The mosaic pictures a red deer, jumping to the left, looking back over his shoulder. The antlers are quite big and ornamental with many ramifications. There are also two ornamented, curved stems, framing the deer, each ending in flower buds. Below the deer, it’s shadow is visible. The front legs are lifted high, pointing forwards, while the hind legs are hidden behind some kind of verdure. The body is mainly made of reddish-brown tesserae where the darkest ones illustrates the shadows running along head, neck and shoulder/legs. The antlers consists of green and yellow tesserae. Also the nose and ear have nuances in green. The pupil consists of one single, black tessera. The verdure is composed by tesserae in green, blue and turquoise, a few ones are yellow and red colored. The background is white, and these tesserae are generally bigger than the other.
