Abstract Two months after Hitler’s appointment as German Chancellor, the historian Otto Westphal triumphantly proclaimed the end of an era. The period during which ‘Bismarck’s enemies’ had ruled over Germany was irrevocably over. Westphal concluded his talk at Gottingen’s Historical Society by emphasizing that Germany was currently witnessing a ‘revolution and a re-creation of Bismarck’s Reich at the same time, a revolutionary transformation with deep historical sympathies’ .
