Portrait Christian IV., King of Denmark and Norway (1577-1648)

Portrait of Christian IV., King of Denmark. The Danish monarch is shown here as a chest pattern to the right. His little eyes are directed at the viewer. Instead of a wig, he wears back combed hair and chin and mustache. A powerful neck brace adorns his neck. The other clothing consists of armor, which is largely covered by a sash over his left shoulder. The effigy is oval framed by a frame cartouche, which has decorations on the lower and upper ends. The frame contains an inscription. Christian IV became King of Denmark and Norway in 1588, but he was still unsuccessful, so his mother took over the government business. He was crowned in 1596 and began to build Denmark into a military power by building new fortresses and concentrating everything on upgrading. He also ran a representative farm and promoted shipping. His rule also fell into the Thirty Years' War, during which he acted as mediator and secured his territories. Signatures are not specified in the sheet. The Duke August Library in Wolfenbüttel owns a specimen that is sideways to this present, but is very similar. Unfortunately, the stecher is unknown there, but it was moved by Johann Janssonius in Amsterdam in 1627. All other collections that have a copy of the paper, including the Berlin State Library, date the sheet between 1610 and 1650. Label: [medallion] CHRISTIANVS IIII. D. DANIAE.
