At the age of 16, Flemish graphic artist Johan Wierix, almost four decades after Dürer’s death, produced an equilateral copy of his engraving “Adam and Eve.” To demonstrate his skill, he meticulously adhered to the template. Just Dürer he shows the ancestors in front of the backdrop of a dense forest. Between and in front of the trees rising up there are all kinds of animals that are used to characterize the image personnel. Seduced by the serpent, Eve reaches the skeptically looking Adam the forbidden fruit picked by the Tree of Knowledge. Mauquoy-Hendrickx lists three states of the record: before the writing, with the writing and ultimately with the year “1566” (cf. Mauquoy-Hendrickx I.9.54).
