Understanding NCDs

View through CrossRef
This chapter helps readers understand about non-communicable diseases (NCDs). It explains the term NCDs in the context of this book, based on the 2011 Political Declaration of the High-Level Meeting of the United Nations General Assembly on the Prevention and Control of NCDs. This chapter provides information to compare and contrast NCD burden in countries in different regions and with different development levels. This chapter also describes the inequalities in the NCD burden and shows how the socioeconomic status is linked to NCD outcomes. It explains how the unequal distribution of NCD outcomes is the result of a combination of poor social policies and programmes, unfair economic arrangements, and bad politics. It discusses the importance of addressing social determinants to reduce the NCD burden.
