Research Development on MSMEs Performance: A Bibliometric Mapping Using Scopus Data 1* Milda Kosay,
View through CrossRef
Research Aims: This study aims to map and analyze the development of research on the performance of MSMEs (Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises) from 2015 to 2025 using bibliometric techniques. Specifically, it seeks to identify publication trends, leading countries and authors, influential journals, collaboration patterns, and dominant research themes in MSME performance studies indexed in the Scopus database.
Design/methodology/approach: This research employs a bibliometric analysis approach using secondary data obtained from the Scopus database. A total of 164 relevant documents published between 2015 and 2025 were analyzed. The data were processed and visualized using VOSviewer software to examine co-authorship networks, citation analysis, and keyword co-occurrence, enabling the identification of research productivity, collaboration structures, and thematic clusters within MSME performance literature.
Research Findings: The findings indicate a substantial growth in MSME performance research, particularly during the period 2022–2025. Indonesia and India were identified as the most productive countries, while several authors and journals demonstrated significant influence based on publication output and citation impact. The keyword analysis revealed five major thematic clusters, showing a shift in research focus from internal business and financial performance toward sustainability, digitalization, resilience, and global challenges such as COVID-19.
Theoretical Contribution/Originality: This study contributes theoretically by providing a comprehensive and updated bibliometric overview of MSME performance research over a ten-year period. It offers a systematic mapping of the intellectual structure and thematic evolution of the field, highlighting emerging research directions related to sustainability and technological adaptation. The findings enrich the literature by serving as a reference framework for future academic studies and evidence-based policymaking aimed at enhancing MSME competitiveness and sustainable development.
