Meander River in Urban Area
View through CrossRef
Urban areas are usually located in the downstream zone, which has a meander pattern. Since the Meander belt has a curvilinear shape, erosion of the river cliff or bank erosion is one of the serious problems in urban areas. Another problem there is also landslide that sometimes occurs as a response to the natural or man-made disturbance of the fluvial system. According to land utilization in urban areas, it is subject to potentially serious impact caused by meander river transformation due to erosion and sedimentation, and floodplains will undergo modification with time. The Meander River channelized in the past, causing environmental problems, changing the ecology of the river, and requiring heavy maintenance. In the lower zone of the river, the soil classification is usually Clayey Silt and Sandy Silt, with material composition are clay, silt, and sand. The previous research findings concluded that soil composition with a high percentage of silt would change rapidly compared to soil composition with a low percentage of silt. The result of the experiment is its qualitative approach without quantifying sedimentation in the inner bend and erodible sand in the outer bank, and finding the relation between meander river transformation and soil classification. The result may be able to help resource managers evaluate the long-term effects of floodplain management and bank stabilization measures related to urban development. Case study of the Pesanggrahan river normalization that is located in Jakarta city also reflects the impact of cutting off the meander river located in the upstream area, triggering the amount of sediment transport at the downstream area.
Title: Meander River in Urban Area
