Evolution of fortification and protective structures

View through CrossRef
The full-scale invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation has demonstrated the growing importance of engineering fortifications, protective structures, engineering barriers, and more. Modern warfare has introduced new threats and challenges that significantly affect the battlefield, the protection of critical infrastructure, and the civilian population in rear areas, including the specifics of constructing engineering fortifications and protective structures. The study of the evolution of fortification and protective structures from ancient times to the present day allows us to trace how approaches to defense construction have changed in response to current military threats. This, in turn, makes it possible to forecast directions for their further development and improvement. The conducted review highlights how important this area of military science is and how much it currently requires a serious approach from both the military and the state as a whole. Analyzing new modern fortification solutions, their effectiveness, and weaknesses is essential for increasing the country's defense capability under the conditions of a constant threat of attack. The paper also presents the main approaches to the construction of field fortification structures, defining their functional purpose and likely military design threats. Proposals are made regarding possible changes in approaches to field fortification in modern warfare, taking into account the experience of combat operations in Ukraine, as well as directions for further development. Approaches to the protection of civilians from enemy aerial attacks from the time of World War II to the present are also considered, with the identification of future development directions. Under the current conditions of the war in Ukraine, fortifications, engineering protection structures, and protective shelters play a key role in creating defense lines, protecting military personnel and critical infrastructure, and preserving civilian lives. Therefore, the study of the evolution of fortification and protective structures is a critically important state task, both from a military and a civil perspective. The development of the theory of construction of fortification and protective structures will contribute to strengthening national defense, adapting to new threats, and improving the safety of the population and critical infrastructure.
