Abstract
The arrival of COVID caused closings and cancellations that severely affected Steinbeck news and events in the second, third, and fourth quarters of 2020. Institutions including the Steinbeck House, National Steinbeck Center, and Monterey Library reformatted accordingly, as did the host organization for an important address on Steinbeck and the American West. Promotional plans and major-publication reviews of William Souder's new biography of Steinbeck were also curtailed; some reviews were critical of Steinbeck's reputation and writing, though most reviewers accepted Souder's premise that anger was fundamental to Steinbeck's character from an early age. Travels with Charley remained a frequent focus.
