An informal sketch of a seated man. He sits, slightly slouched, his left arm is resting on a surface at left, his right hand holds a cigarette and rests on his leg. He wears a three-piece suit and had a watch chain from his left pocket. He smiles and looks jolly. The interior is suggested with panelling behind him and a cap hanging on the wall. In ink at bottom right 'Sam the Fireman' 'PD 1943' On paper torn from a notebook, with perforations at top.
