Challenges and Prospect of Operating University Campus Shuttle Services in Lagos State University

This qualitative study examines the Challenges and prospects of operating campus shuttle services at Lagos State University. The purpose of this research is to investigate and have a broader understanding of the challenges and possible prospects that are available for campus shuttle operators within the school environment.The study recruited a sample of 20 respondents consisting of shuttle operators and students at Lagos State University. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions. The findings suggest that the working conditions of operating shuttle services are generally aimed at satisfying the students on campus, and the majority of employees feel that their work is important and contributes to the overall functioning of the university and that the shuttle service faces several challenges which includes mechanical issues with the vehicles, fuel scarcity, holiday and vacation periods, and students not having the exact fare to board the shuttle. The shuttle operators also face difficulties with scheduling, vehicle maintenance, and dealing with uncooperative passengers. Despite these challenges, the study identified several prospects which could mean that the shuttle service can be a viable business opportunity, including increased funding, better route planning, and improved communication with passengers. The survey results indicated that students were generally not satisfied with the shuttle service, but expressed concerns about overcrowding and delays. The study recommends that the university should increase shuttle frequency. Increasing the frequency of shuttle runs can help to reduce wait times and ensure that everyone is able to get their destination on time. This study also recommends the inclusion of shuttle services as a means of awareness to fresher’s orientation level across all faculties at LASU. One of the major challenges shuttle operators face with students are caused by miscommunication and lack of information about the operation of the shuttle services. This is especially true for students who are new to the university and are not familiar with the layout of the campus. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into the experiences and perspectives of shuttle operators and students, and highlights the need for continuous improvement in campus shuttle services.
