Ramsey’s Pragmatism

Abstract
Ramsey’s pragmatism, while having some provenance in Russell’s attraction to pragmatism, came mostly and explicitly from Peirce. This chapter sets out that connection and articulates Ramsey’s excellent reading of Peirce. Belief is a habit or rule with which we meet the future and beliefs are assessed in terms of whether they meet the future well or not. Ramsey, unlike his major interlocutor, Wittgenstein, could make sense of partial belief, conceptual change, negation, general beliefs, causal belief, and the conclusions of inductive arguments. It is also argued that Ramsey’s theory of truth is not the redundancy theory so many take it to be—rather, he was on the way to a pragmatist theory of truth before his untimely death at the age of 26.
