Guillaume Oresme, traducteur de la Tetrabible de Claude Ptolémée

Quelques historiens ont voulu attribuer à Nicole Oresme la traduction française connue par un seul manuscrit (Paris, BN fr. 1348, ff. 1-223), d'une version latine de la Tetrabible de Claude Ptolémée. Si certains ont entériné l'attribution, d'autres l'ont mentionnée avec réserve mais sans apporter pour la récuser des arguments décisifs. Il n'a pas semblé inutile d'essayer d'acquérir des certitudes sur ce point de la bibliographie oresmienne.
Une analyse recourant à quatre types d'investigation - historique, paléographique, codicologique et littéraire - montre la fragilité, et parfois même la fantaisie, des preuves mises en avant pour soutenir une telle paternité ; alors qu'une série de démonstrations beaucoup plus solides conduit à enlever cette traduction de la liste des oeuvres oresmiennes.
Tout concourt à accorder crédit à l'information donnée dans le préambule de la traduction : la traduction a pour auteur un certain Guillaume Oresme, attesté dans d'autres documents.
