Perceived Interparental Conflict, Hopelessness, and Psychological Distress among Young Adults
View through CrossRef
This study examined the relationship between perceived interparental conflict, hopelessness, and psychological distress among young adults in Pakistan, using a cross-sectional design with a sample of young adult participants. Standardized instruments were used to assess the study variables, including the Children’s Perception of Interparental Conflict Scale, the Beck Hopelessness Scale, and the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale. The findings revealed that perceived interparental conflict was significantly associated with hopelessness and psychological distress, with higher levels of perceived conflict related to increased hopelessness and greater psychological distress. Mediation analysis further indicated that hopelessness partially mediated the relationship between perceived interparental conflict and psychological distress, suggesting that exposure to parental conflict may increase feelings of hopelessness, which in turn contributes to psychological distress. Limitations include the use of self-report measures and a convenience sample, which may limit the generalizability of the findings.
