AbstractThis chapter explores the practices of printing and publishing music in early modern Italy, and Monteverdi’s success in the madrigalian marketplace. Formats, typesetting, and production issues are discussed (including the problems of second and subsequent editions. So, too, is the question of whether a book of madrigals published in separate voice parts counts as a “book.” Monteverdi’s Seventh Book of madrigals (1619) is treated as a case study, and also as a form of marriage counseling for Duke Ferdinando Gonzaga and his new bride, Caterina de’ Medici. More generally, what does printed music tell us, and what does it leave out?
